Mientras transcurría la Segunda Guerra Mundial el Papa sentado en el sillón de Pedro era Pío XII, un italiano de nombre Pacelli que había sido secretario del anterior, León XIII. Los italianos en general tuvieron un comportamiento ejemplar durante el Holocauto, inclusive la dirigencia fascista. Pacelli era un oscuro (no confundir con oscurantismo) burócrata de la Iglesia. Despreciaba a Hitler pero, a su vez, le temía. Y a pesar de haber actuado en forma esporádica a favor de algunos judíos, el pedido insistente de algunas organizaciones que declare el antisemitismo y la persecución de los judíos como pecado cayeron en oídos sordos. Tanto èl, como muchos otros, franceses, holandeses, belgas, húngaros, rumanos, etc. no hicieron lo suficientepara combatir e impedir el holocausto. Lo terrible del abandono del Papa de Hitler – como era llamado – es que estaba en una posición única para salvar a los hermanos de Jesús, su Dios. Eran los hermanos de Jesús los que eran asesinados. Y si Jesús hubiera vivido en Europa en esa época probablemente también él hubiera terminado en los campos de Auschwitz y Majdanek. El ejemplo de Pío XII perdura hasta hoy. En el obispo Williamson, en el Papa Ratzinger que lo rehabilitó, en los países árabes. La oscuridad del Papa reflejada tan bien en el cuadro de Bacon se esparcía cual luz. En general la oscuridad es la ausencia de luz pero aquí Pío XII emite oscuridad. Desafortunadamente para la humanidad no tuvimos la oportunidad de poner en juicio a este padre que abandonó al hijo y que abandonó especialmente las enseñanzas "Amarás a tu prójimo como a tí mismo". Y eso exige luz. El mandamiento exige de nosostros algo más que cardíaco. Es decir, el mandamiento debería ser: " Actuarás hacia tu prójimo como si lo amases como a tí mismo".

During World War II the Pope sitting in St. Peter’s Chair was Pius XII, an Italian born Pacelli who had been secretary to the previous Pope, Leo XIII.
During holocaust Italians had, in general, an exemplary behaviour, even during fascist times.
Pacelli was a dark (nothing to do with obscurantism) bureaucrat of the Church. He despised Hitler but, at the same time, he was afraid of him. And, even though erratically, he acted in favour of some jews, the persistent claims from some organizations for him to consider antisemitism and persecution of jews as a sin, were not heard.
Not only him but also many others –Belgians, Hungarians, Rumanians, French and Dutchs- did not do enough to fight against and stop the holocaust.
The most terrible thing about the (so called) Hitler Pope’ s abandonment is that he was in an ideal position to save the brothers of Jesus, his God. Jesus’ s brothers were the ones being assassinated in Europe. On top of it all, had Jesus lived in Europe in those times, he himself would have probably ended in Auschwitz and Majdanek camps. Pius XII’s example prevails today in Bishop Williamson or Pope Ratzinger who reinstated him, and also in Arab countries.
Unfortunately for humanity, we did not have the chance to file a suit against this father who abandoned his son and, specially, abandoned the teachings " You shall love your neighbour as yourself " That, would require light. The Commandments demands from us something more than a heart. I mean, the Commandment should be : « You should act towards your neighbour as if you loved him as you love yourself »
